Diwali 2026 Holidays: Where to Go from Ahmedabad & Patan

Diwali 2026 falls on Sunday 8 November. Dhanteras is on the 6th, and the Gujarati New Year follows right after — which means most families in Ahmedabad and Patan get a clear run of days off, and every one of them is thinking about the same thing you are.

This is a practical guide to where those days are best spent, written from what people actually ask us for. A word on price before anything else: Diwali is peak season, and the rates in this article are our everyday rates, not Diwali rates. Hotels and airlines charge more that fortnight and we pass on what we are charged, so treat the numbers below as the floor, not the quote. Ask us and we will tell you the real figure for your dates.

Book earlier than feels necessary

The single most useful thing in this article: the constraint at Diwali is never the itinerary, it is hotel and train availability.

Trains out of Gujarat for the Diwali week sell out well before the holiday, and the hotels worth staying in take their bookings months ahead. By late October, what is left is what nobody else wanted. If you are reading this in September, you are in good time. If you are reading it in the last week of October, we can still put something together, but the choice will be narrower and the price higher.

Snow, if that is the point

For most Gujarati families the Diwali holiday is the one chance a year to show the children real snow.

Kashmir (5 nights, from ₹14,999 off-peak) is the most requested trip we run. Early November sits at the turn of the season — the chinars are still in autumn colour, Gulmarg has usually had its first snow, and the valley is quieter than the summer rush. Nights are properly cold, so pack for it.

Manali (5 nights, from ₹18,000 off-peak) is the easier version: Solang Valley for the snow, the drive through the Atal Tunnel, and Kasol on the way back. It is a longer road journey but needs less planning than Kashmir.

Both are cold-weather trips in November. If you are travelling with elderly parents or a small child, say so when you call — it changes which hotels we put you in.

Temples, for a Diwali that stays traditional

Dwarka and Somnath (3 nights, from ₹6,500 off-peak) is the trip people take when the holiday is meant to be a pilgrimage rather than a break. Dwarkadhish and Bet Dwarka, the Nageshwar and Somnath Jyotirlingas, and Porbandar on the way. It is entirely within Gujarat, which matters at Diwali: no flights to fight over, and you can leave when you like.

It is also the gentlest option for older travellers, and the easiest to shorten or stretch by a day.

Short breaks, if you only have a long weekend

Not every Diwali holiday is a week.

Udaipur (2 nights, from ₹4,299 off-peak) is about four hours from Ahmedabad by road. City Palace, a boat on Lake Pichola, sunset at the Monsoon Palace. During Diwali the city lights up, which is worth seeing in its own right.

Udaipur with Kumbhalgarh and Ranakpur (3 nights, from ₹9,999 off-peak) adds the hill fort and the marble Jain temple for one more night away.

Warm water, if you have had enough of winter

Kerala (5 nights, from ₹24,000 off-peak) is at its best from September to March, so Diwali lands in a good window — Munnar's tea hills, and a private houseboat on the Alleppey backwaters.

Abroad — but only if you start now

Thailand, Bali and Vietnam all run through the Diwali window. The catch is not the trip, it is the paperwork: visas and international flights need lead time, and flight prices in the Diwali fortnight rise steeply and early.

If an international Diwali trip is the plan and it is already late September, call today rather than next week. By mid-October the flights are usually the problem, not the hotels.

When you message us, these four things get you a real number instead of a range:

1. Your dates — even roughly. "The Diwali week" is enough to start.
2. How many people, and how many are children or seniors.
3. Where you would start from — Ahmedabad, Patan, or somewhere else.
4. Your budget per person, honestly. It saves everyone time, and it is not a negotiation — it just tells us which hotels to check.
